FOOTBALL fans are being warned that any drink-fuelled disorder during the Euro 2012 celebrations will not be tolerated.
With the tournament in Poland and the Ukraine beginning tomorrow, North Yorkshire Police say they fear there could be trouble due to fans having too much alcohol while watching games in pubs, bars and clubs.
The force has pledged to be extra vigilant in the run-up to, during and after England matches to combat any problems that may occur.
On match days, extra officers will be on patrol alongside special constables in and around pubs and bars throughout York, Selby and North Yorkshire to deter potential troublemakers.
Chief Inspector Dave Hannan, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “This is an exciting summer of sport beginning with the Euro 2012 football.
“We want people to enjoy the tournament, get behind the England players and have a great time. What we don’t want is people causing trouble and spoiling the festivities for everyone else.
“As with all events of this nature, there is the potential for disorder when people drink alcohol to excess. If people drink responsibly and behave there won’t be a problem.
“However, violence or football-related disorder will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly.”
Historically, police respond to more incidents of domestic violence during major football tournaments and officers are displaying posters on their cars and vans to warn people of the tough punishments they could face for domestic assaults.
Chief Insp Hannan said: “Obviously, tensions run high when England are playing at major tournaments but that is no excuse for violent behaviour, particularly in the home.
“If you are a victim of domestic violence, please don’t suffer in silence, the police are here to help you and your welfare is our primary concern.”
To report matters of domestic violence phone North Yorkshire Police on 101, or 999 if in immediate danger. Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
The tournament kicks-off tomorrow with the opening game between the co-hosts Poland and Greece.
England’s first group game in Euro 2012 sees Roy Hodgson’s men tackle France on Monday. The Three Lions then play Sweden on Friday, June 15 followed by the Ukraine on Tuesday, June 19.
