THIS couple from York are celebrating 60 happy years of marriage today.
Derek and Anita Haw, both 83, from Finsbury Avenue, off Bishopthorpe Road, met while working for the railway in what is now the Cedar Court Grand Hotel in Station Rise.
Mrs Haw said: “I was in the secretarial section and my husband worked in what was known as the Loco Office.
“We were married at Clifton Church on June 7, 1952.”
Shortly before the birth of their first son, David, in 1957, Mrs Haw retired while her husband Derek took on the family newsagent’s shop at the bottom of South Bank Avenue, where he stayed until he retired.
Looking forward to a quiet celebration today, Mrs Haw said: “We are going to have a family get-together later this month. Today Derek and I will be going out for a quiet lunch.”
The couple have two sons, David and Patrick, and four grandchildren.
