The nation has had a right royal jubilee party but the fun goes on… Brian Page seeks out some homes with super entertainment potential.
FUNNIEST story I’ve heard recently was the one about the two old ladies who were kicked out of a cafe in the North-East for refusing to stand up for the National Anthem.
Apparently, at three in the afternoon every day, the cafe owners played God Save the Queen and all the customers are expected to stand up. So when two ladies of, well, advanced age, refused and started muttering about Republicanism, they were promptly hoofed out.
What has that got to do with homes to rent, I hear you ask? Well, as we’ve seen, the two Geordie women were very much in the minority when the country celebrated Her Majesty’s Jubilee with street parties, garden parties and house parties up and down the land.
And, yes, now you’ve got it, we’ve decided this week to look for rental properties that could host a good old knees-up (whether to celebrate a Jubilee or just an old-fashioned family gathering).
And we hit immediately on a super spot... it is Broad Oak Farm on York Road, Sutton on the Forest.
Set in a quiet rural area overlooking open fields, it’s an ideal spot in many ways.
A rural retreat, it also has good access to the York ring road and other commuting routes. Offered unfurnished, it has an entrance hall, cloakroom, a super breakfast kitchen and utility room, a large sitting room with open fire and a sun room.
Put these together and you have the ideal facilities for a family party – and, what’s more, there are great gardens with stables and a paddock (available by separate negotiation), just ripe for outdoor celebrations.
Upstairs, there is plenty of room for guests with a double bedroom and en-suite shower room, two further double bedrooms and a family bathroom.
A lot of house, plenty of gardens, and the rental is a very reasonable £825pcm.
Interested parties should apply to Linley and Simpson.
“Ideal for entertaining both inside and out,” is how Letters Ltd describe our next property, a four-bedroomed detached family house in Horsefield Way, Dunnington.
Highlights here include a spacious through lounge diner with feature gas fire and patio doors out to the garden.
The good-sized kitchen has a duelfuel cooker and a range of integrated appliances including washing machine and dishwasher, and with a smart breakfast bar. The ground floor also has a cloakroom and playroom/ study.
Upstairs, there is another potential study or fourth bedroom, two good double bedrooms and a single and a family bathroom. Outside there is a good garden.
Letters Ltd are seeking a rental of £925pcm.
Stephensons, meanwhile, suggest two properties for our Jubilee celebratory round-up.
The first is Appleby Cottage in Skelton Road, Langthorpe, a substantial and well-presented family house built around ten years ago. It has plenty of space on offer including a lounge, separate dining room, a kitchen and utility room – with the bonus of an additional morning room.
There are four bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower room and a family bathroom.
The landscaped gardens provide the ideal area for al fresco dining with a delightful sunny aspect. There is also a garage and ample parking for visitors.
The rental is £1,295pcm.
The second Stephensons offering is Ridgefield in Escrick Road, Stillingfleet, a particularly spacious detached bungalow occupying a super spot in the heart of the pretty village. Here again there is lots of space with a large reception hall, a 23ft through lounge and a separate dining room.
There is a beautiful oak fitted breakfast kitchen with fitted appliances including oven and hob, dishwasher and fridge and a utility room off. There is also a ground floor cloakroom.
Upstairs, there are three double bedrooms and a house bathroom.
Outside, the large gardens provide ample room to romp around (and, best of all, the lawns and hedges will be maintained by the landlord, phew!) The rental is £850pcm.
We’re heading back to town for our final two properties, the first of which is in the very, very des-res area of The Mount, York.
The property is a traditional semi-detached house offering generously-proportioned accommodation comprising entrance hall, modern kitchen with breakfast bar, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, double oven/gas hob, washing machine, a family room/study or playroom and a large lounge through dining room.
A stunning staircase leads up to the first floor offering a big double bedroom with bay window to the front followed by three further good-sized bedrooms and a house bathroom.
To the outside are lawned front and rear gardens and a driveway.
The lettings agents, Ashtons, are seeking a rental of £1,350pcm, And in our last but definitely not least spot, we have a good family home in another sought-after spot, this one in Avenue Terrace, Bootham, York.
It is, say the agents, a beautifully-presented family home within walking distance of the city centre.
The highlights include a two reception rooms, a modern fitted kitchen and a large utility room.
That’s the basic info – what that doesn’t tell you is that these are lovely rooms with lots of characterful period touches including high ceilings, coving and cornicing, solid wood flooring and feature fireplaces.
The four bedrooms are spread gently across the top two floors of the property, and there is a luxury fitted house bathroom.
A courtyard garden to the rear and on-street permit parking to the front complete the package, for which Ashtons are seeking £1,100pcm.
