I HAVE no axe to grind over Monks Cross, no opinion to offer. However, Mrs E Dawson worries York City may not survive the latest out-of-own enterprise (Letters, June 1).
Without a car, on May 29 I visited the city with my wife by bus to do some shopping. Early on the town seemed quiet, but soon filled up with other shoppers.
We had lunch in BHS and then made our way to Stonebow to return home; the queues on both sides of the road had many shoppers with shopping bags full and because of that we had to wait 50 minutes for our No12.
We saw many shoppers returning with bags and during our wait we saw a Leeds bus fill up, followed by a double-decker Leeds bus and, shortly afterwards, a third Leeds bus – all carrying people with bags, none of whom were probably tourists.
The Park&Ride buses were too numerous to count, bringing more shoppers to town. We were surprised so many people had the money to spend, especially on a Tuesday.
York has survived all the outer shopping centres so far and we shall have to see how we survive the latest.
Dennis Barton, Woodthorpe, York.
