AN inspirational man who embarked on a 1,000-mile charity bike ride after overcoming cancer has been nominated for a Community Pride Award for his efforts to help others.

Twenty-one-year-old Harry Baines, of Fulford Road, York, is due to arrive back in the city today following an epic bike ride, which has seen him cycle through England, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and for the automotive charity, BEN.

It is a huge achievement, made all the more remarkable as he was diagnosed with lymphoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, at the age of 19.

Following 12 months’ intensive treatment, including radiotherapy, Harry is now in remission and has since embarked on two charity fundraisers.

Nominating him as fundraiser of the year, Harry’s aunt, Katie Baines, said: “Harry battled the disease with bravery and positivity.

“Not once did I or the rest of the family ever hear Harry complain.

“He always had a smile and cheer and is an inspiration to everyone, talking throughout his illness how he wanted to help other cancer patients who were less fortunate than himself and make a difference to their lives.

“Harry is only 21 years old – a remarkable young man who is kind, selfless and focused on helping others.

“He does not brag. He quietly gets stuck in.”

The former Bootham School pupil and current student at Sheffield Hallam University also cycled 500 miles across the country to raise money for Cancer Research and Parkinson’s UK last year.

The Community Pride Awards, which will have a York 800 theme this year, are run in partnership with City of York Council and sponsored by Benenden Healthcare.
