MORE than 260 residents have come forward to help ensure crowds watching the Olympic torch on its journey through York stay safe.
The volunteer stewards, enlisted by City of York Council and the employee-volunteering charity York Cares, will play an important role in helping manage and support the crowds, as well as assisting people with information on the Torch and convoy.
Coun Sonja Crisp said there had been a ‘fantastic’ response. “Stewards are vital to ensure the Torch relay runs smoothly, and it’s great to see that so many local people are giving up their time to help make the event a great experience for everyone attending,” she said.
