Anger and disgust were my emotions on reading of Freddie Johnson’s problem over attending the opening ceremony of the Bomber Command Memorial (The Press, June 9).
He is aged 91 and completed 92 missions, yet the faceless ones have decided he cannot attend. Who is more qualified?
The “spokeswoman” suggesting he can attend later seems not to understand that he is very fortunate to still be here and, like all very senior citizens, he lives from day to day.
In any scheme of things, he should have been top of the list and when honouring his fallen comrades surely one that still lives should be equally honoured.
I would have ensured that he and the few others like him had a personal preview of this long-delayed honour to those heroes who set off night by night fully aware that many would not come back.
True heroes such as Mr Johnson should be honoured as such. It doesn’t seem that his association have been much help; shame on them.
