AN Olympic gold medalist visited a York school today to provide a sprinting masterclass for the next generation of athletes.
Jason Gardener, who took gold in the 100 metre relay in the Athens Olympics in 2004, was at York High School in Acomb to pass on training and fitness lessons, before challenging pupils to beat him on the track.
The day was part of the run up to Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week, which is using the excitement of the forthcoming London Olympics to inspire young people to do more sport.
Mr Gardener said he always spotted potential at such events.
“There are always people who put themselves out there and identify themselves as talented young athletes so it’s good to be able to inspire them.
“With London 2012 just around the corner , Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week is a fantastic way for young people to really feel part of the celebrations and it’s great to see the pupils in York getting involved in Olympic sports in preparation for the week.”
He said it was now more important than ever to “excite and encourage” young people to take up sport.
About 150 pupils from schools around York took part in yesterday’s event at York High School in Cornlands Road.
National School Sport Week runs from June 25 to June 29 and will see schools throughout the country take part in sport-related activities such as festivals and competitions within and between schools.
Gavin Cowley, deputy head at York High School, said he was excited to have Mr Gardener at the school.
He said: “Having Jason here encouraging the youngsters to get involved and try Olympic and Paralympic sports will be a real boost.”
