Well done, Jamelia. The Brummie lass has trumped the likes of Beyonce Knowles and Black Eyed Peas' Fergie to deliver one of the most vibrant and enjoyable R'n'B albums of the year.
Relying more on old-fashioned melody with meaningful lyrics and a fine voice, Jamelia's Walk With Me is an album to consume and cherish, from beginning to end. If there is any justice, Jamelia should be scoring hits with Something About You and the funky Do Me Right, which has been produced by the legendary Afrika Bambaataa.
Likewise, No More, which features a sample from the Stranglers' Golden Brown, and Ain't A Love, which samples Kool And The Gang's Jungle Jazz, are strong hit contenders.
It is also good to see the return of another UK R'n'B act, Tasmin Archer. In 1992, the Bradford-born Archer topped the UK charts with Sleeping Satellite. Like Jamelia, she writes her own material, and relies on her own delivery rather than token bad boy rappers.
Again, the end results are pleasing. On is an enjoyable, if too easy listening, showcase of Archer today, which many will warm to. The likes of Effect Is Monotony and A Letter To God indicate that Archer is a strong communicator and fine live performer.
Although Tasmin is unlikely to score any hit singles from her new album, I would certainly love to see her perform these songs live.
