I read with interest your article about the vital work carried out by Lumberjills during the Second World War (Special Branch, June 8).
In peace time there were fewer than 200 women employed in timber work and their duties would have involved only light work.
The Womens Timber Corps. (WTC) was established as a special branch of the Womens Land Army (WLA) in 1942. Just a year later there were almost 4,000 members.
The Yorkshire Museum of Farming has a substantial archive relating to the WLA and the WTC. Anyone with research inquiries please get in touch on 01904 489966.
