Thank you for your article and beautiful photograph, (Great British greyhound walk in York raises awareness for rehome need) in The Press, June 4).

It is a pleasure to envision the grace and elegance of greyhounds, whippets and lurchers enjoying a stroll through York.

Kudos to organisers Tina Abbott and Jane Lund, to all at Greyhound Gap for devoted work rehoming greyhounds and to the RSPCA spokesperson for speaking out about the life greyhounds face as racers.

No longer a secret, the public has become increasingly aware of the cruelty in greyhound racing.

Considered as commodities, over-bred so there is always a replacement, the greyhounds are valued only as long as they generate a profit. That is no way to treat a dog.

I have adopted ex-racing greyhounds since 1997, and I am a board member of GREY2K USA, the largest national non-profit greyhound protection organisation in the US. For more information, please visit grey2kusa.org
