I WOULD like to offer readers some clarification regarding the Gambling Act 2005 following Ms Linsey's letter.
Ms Linsey is correct that only those who are classed as interested parties, i.e. residents or businesses, or their representatives, who live or operate in the proximity of a premise applying for a licence to operate a casino may make representations on that specific application.
The council has, however, just completed an extensive 12-week consultation on its future policy regarding a casino in York. This consultation has been open to all residents, businesses, trade interests and indeed anyone who wished to comment.
One of the main questions was whether the city should embrace or reject applications for a casino, if any more should be released by the government.
Far from restricting those who can comment on this issue, the council has done all it can to encourage as many people as possible to make their views known.
The consultation responses and the council's future policy on casinos will be considered by the council's Licensing Committee on 3 November. This is an open meeting and anyone can register to speak at it.
Richard Haswell, head of licensing and regulation, City of York Council, De Grey House, York.
