JEANETTE Linsey (Yes to a casino, Readers' Letters, October 13) says there are many people who would welcome the proposed casino, yet there are many who dread returning to the days when they were regularly woken up by the drunken groups walking home through nearby housing estates, causing damage. I well remember the complaints I received.
City of York Council is not turning a blind eye to the jobs and increased tourism, but one has to ask how many jobs will be created and what effect it will have on tourism.
Will people come and stay in York, to go to a casino, or will they commute here and back in one night?
York residents will have a say in applications, but it isn't the council which has determined who is an interested party, this is something laid down in the Act.
Just like the Licensing Act 2003 we have legislation which has been introduced without proper consideration, lacking the secondary legislation to clarify how the legislation is to be operated, and local authorities are being hampered by regulations which leave much to be desired in protecting the interests of the local population.
As a councillor, and one who has heard more licensing hearings than any other, I will always take the residents' views into account, in as far as national legislation will allow me, but I don't want a casino without proper safeguards for my ward.
