I UNDERSTAND that City of York Council is considering the closure of the Towthorpe waste disposal site in order to save money.
I can hardly believe that this is being given serious consideration.
This amenity is used by thousands of households in Huntington, Haxby, Wigginton, Stockton-on- Forest, Warthill, Holtby, Earswick, New Earswick, Strensall, Flaxton and many other villages.
If it were to be closed, I believe the proposal would be that all these people would have to dispose of their waste at James Street in York.
Apart from the inconvenience and cost involved, can our council seriously be prepared to create all that additional traffic congestion and resulting air pollution in the roads leading to James Street?
Are those in the villages I have mentioned going to be consulted and are the residents in Hull Road, Heworth, Tang Hall and Layerthorpe aware of the potential extra traffic going past their homes?
I am expressing my strong opposition in this open letter. I urge others to let the council know their views.
John Reid, Moor Lane, Strensall.
