COUNCILLORS in York say they want clarity over changes to how the city’s salt bins are funded over concerns some people could be forced to pay twice for the service.
City of York Council’s Liberal Democrat group claimed parish councils will be asked to fund bins in the area they cover, while those in non-parished areas will be paid for by the local authority, raising fears some residents may face “double taxation”.
Fulford councillor Keith Aspden said: “People in Fulford, for example, could be paying for salt bin provision in the village through their parish council precept, while at the same time contributing to the cost of provision elsewhere through their council tax bill.
“Meanwhile, residents down the road will have their bins wholly funded by the council and only be paying once for the service. This is plainly unfair and the council needs to put a solution in place, and I will continue to press for answers.”
