Bright interludes

You wouldn’t know it from looking at these lovely country scenes, however. Press photographers and our readers alike have been out with their cameras despite the weather – and in between the rain storms they have managed to find the odd spot of bright sunshine to take the photographs on these pages today.

Award-winning Press photographer Anthony Chappel-Ross went walking in the Dales – and came back with our stunning main picture of cattle grazing beneath the ramparts of Malham Cove. Not to be beaten, fellow Press snapper Mike Tipping visited Beningbrough Hall to get his wonderfully summery photograph of flowers on the lawn.

Fellow Press photographer David Harrison had less luck in avoiding the rain, but he did capture a very striking picture of a bedraggled kestrel trying to find cover beneath an overhanging brick at a farm near Goole.

Our readers have also submitted a selection of photographs. Robert Taylor’s picture of a barn owl ghosting towards the camera, taken at Poppleton, is certainly an eye-catcher. And there’s a lovely touch of humour to Michael Bulmer’s photograph of a young Highland cow apparently looking for directions on the North York Moors.

Ken Craig got up close and personal with a Peacock butterfly on Knavesmire, while Nick Fletcher, from Malton, had to go no further than his own back garden for his photograph of rhododendrons in bloom.

If you are inspired by any of these photographs to get out and about yourself, the good news is that over the next few days, we can expect some sunny spells, according to the Met Office.

Today will be mostly dry in Yorkshire, and while it will be cold, wet and breezy on Friday, with possibly some heavy rain, over the weekend there will be brighter spells amid the showers.
