Police are appealing for information after a woman was attacked on a York footpath.
The attack happened between 10pm and 10.20pm on Monday, as the 24-year-old woman from York was walking along the Cinder Lane cycle lane and footpath, from Salisbury Terrace towards the city centre.
A police spokesman said she was approaching the grassy area when she was approached from behind by a man, who grabbed her and threw her to the ground.
He then punched her and demanded money.
But a brave passer-by challenged the man and he ran off.
The attacker is described as white, in his early 30s, of thin build, about 6ft tall, with short hair. He was wearing a light- coloured, long-sleeved shirt and jeans.
Anyone with information is asked to phone DC Mike Avison, of York CID, on 0845 60 60 247.
