SPORT clubs in York are to host open days to help get more people fitter and healthier as part of the York Gold 2012 summer of sporting activities.
Starting shortly after the Olympic Torch visits the city next week, the programme of open days has been awarded the Inspire Mark by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Game. Whether residents fancy having a go at an Olympic sport like sailing or volleyball, a Paralympic event like boccia, or a stretch at yoga or climbing at Brimham Rocks, there’s something for everyone – at no cost.
Starting off the open days on June 21 at 8pm, York Kendo Club will welcome people aged 16 years and over to Joseph Rowntree School to try for free the modern Japanese martial art of sword-fighting. Coun Sonja Crisp, the council’s cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism said: “Whether people are inspired to become more active by the achievement of the athletes at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, or whether they want to shed a few pounds or join a club to improve their health and wellbeing, there should be something for everyone to try.”
