MOTORISTS faced further delays as a crash took place on the A64 during the second full day of roadworks.
Emergency services were called to the collision between three vehicles at Hazel Bush, near the Sand Hutton junction, at 7.40am.
Fire crews had to cut one person from their vehicle.
Paramedics recommended treatment for three patients with minor injuries, including the one trapped, but no one was taken to hospital.
The accident caused long tailbacks of cars travelling to York and beyond, adding to the problems on the road where the Highways Agency is carrying out a week of road resurfacing work.
One motorist, Nina Swift, 23, said: "My journey normally takes about an hour, but ended up taking one hour 45 minutes. Traffic just came to a standstill and the roads were incredibly busy coming into York once we did start moving."
It follows chaos on York roads yesterday after a crash beneath the Sim Balk Lane flyover during heavy fog, also during the morning rush-hour.
The Highways Agency had warned drivers to add up to 40 minutes to their normal journey times as westbound traffic was diverted around a contra-flow between Askham Bryan and Bilbrough.
But motorists may be looking forward to a respite tomorrow as the roadworks are predicted to finish a day ahead of schedule.
A spokeswoman for the agency said: "The delays at the moment are as we predicted during the rush-hour - but traffic is significantly reduced as soon as it gets to about 10am and there have been no problems during the day.
"Work is currently going well and is slightly ahead of schedule, so we are hoping that it may be finished before the Friday morning rush-hour."
The £250,000 improvement scheme is affecting up to 25,000 drivers who are said to travel on the A64 every day.
Work is being carried out to improve the road surface which has deteriorated as a result of constant use.
Road markings are being improved, worn-out road studs replaced and drainage and landscaping work carried out.
Meanwhile, motorists heading into York city centre are also being hampered by slight delays due to the closure of Cemetery Road, between Heslington Road and Fulford Road, and a section of The Village, through Haxby.
