NORTH Yorkshire primary school pupils whooped with delight as a Second World War Dakota performed a flypast at an action-packed day of workshops held at a York museum today.
Yorkshire Air Museum, in Elvington, combined with North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP) to invite 200 school children to their seventh annual FlightPATH event.
The pupils from six local primary schools took part in four World War Two and flight focused workshops provided by 16 regional-based businesses.
Many dressed up in 1940’s clothing and ended the day all together singing war songs.
The Dakota, which recently led the Diamond Jubilee Flypast, capped off the day by flying over the museum to celebrate RAF Elvington’s 70th anniversary.
Ian Richardson, YAM director, said: “I was thrilled with how everyone reacted to the flypast with the sound of the air siren in the background. The children were hooped with delight.”
Wendy Taylor, NYBEP associate, said: “The sponsors and staff at the air museum have been absolutely brilliant and having the children dressed up has made it feel like you are back in the 1940’s.”
The schools which participated were: Sheriff Hutton Primary, Goathland Primary, Slingsby Community Primary, Osbaldwick Primary, North Duffield Primary and St Mary and St Joseph's RC Primary.
