THE magic of Sonny and Cher was about so much more than simply the music. Okay, so they scored a handful of hits, and I Got You Babe in particular is an absolute Flower Power classic.
But mostly the chemistry relied on kitsch glamour, faux domestic bliss and Cher’s caustic wit. One can almost visualise Cher’s perceived entrapment sweetly singing the songs on this set, and using humour to keep her sanity.
Indeed, musically there is nothing on The Sonny & Cher Collection which would suggest the scintillating path Cher would follow post Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves and Dark Lady. What Now My Love, We’ll Sing In The Sunshine, Unchained Melody and I’m Leaving It All Up To You are great songs, but inappropriate for the rock goddess who allowed us to Believe and Turn Back Time.
A treasure trove of innocence lost, beautifully presented with well-researched notes, which should please the ardent Cher completest.
