Two internationally-acclaimed flower arrangers are among the exhibitors at a flower show being held at York’s Merchant Adventurers’ Hall.
The Acomb Flower Guild’s members are displaying their work alongside arrangements from Janet Hayton, who has organised a display at Westminster Abbey, and George Smith MBE, to mark the York 800 celebrations.
The event will raise funds for the Merchant Adventurers’ Company’s own charity, which supports enterprise education.
All 31 pieces were based around a theme allocated by the Guild, with designs depicting the Olympics, the history of the city, and the activities of the historic guilds. Many incorporated artefacts already on display in the Hall, including the city’s centuries-old ‘pancake bell’, which was rung on Shrove Tuesday to release servants from their labour.
“We’ve been planning this for 18 months. It was great fun and everyone was really enthusiastic about researching their arrangements. The public seem to be enjoying it too,” said Janet.
The event, which runs until Sunday, is open from 10am to 4pm. Entrance is £8 and light refreshments are available.
