IT might have been raining, but York got a taste of Rio this weekend as samba dancers and world music dominated the annual carnival.
Members of Element Dance Company and the University of York’s Latin American Society wowed the crowds as they swayed their way through the city on Saturday to drum rhythms provided by Samba York.
A team of experts in Capoeira - Brazilian street dancers – led the hundred-strong parade from Dean’s Park through Low Petergate, Coney Street and Davygate, finishing in Parliament Street.
Visitors to the city centre were also able to enjoy a vintage fashion fair in Parliament Street and St Sampsons Square, with performances from local and international bands, university societies, cheerleaders and dance exhibitions.
