IT WILL be a family affair at this year’s York 10K when a mother, father and daughter take part in the annual fundraiser set up in memory of Jane Tomlinson.
Louise Brennan, 46, husband Chris, 45, and their eight-year-old daughter, Katie, of Acaster Malbis, will all be taking part on August 5 as thousands of people from all walks of life aim to raise money for good causes.
Veteran runner Louise, who trains several times a week and has done a number of marathons, said it would be her third time running the event and the second event for Mark and Katie, who will be competing in the Mini Run, sponsored by the Arena Group.
Louise said daughter Katie had caught the running bug from her mum and dad, who took part in his first marathon in London in April.
Katie now runs weekly around York’s Knavesmire two-mile track and is part of the City of York Athletics Club.
“She is pretty fast – we have to train to keep up with her,” said Louise.
They will all be running in aid of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal set up to mark the legacy of the fundraising heroine.
“We think Jane was a wonderful person,” Louise said, adding that Mark’s family had been touched by cancer, with his brother and father both receiving successful treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Louise said although she has taken part in a number of bigger runs, she enjoys the York 10k because of the scenic route and the support from residents in the city.
“York is a fantastic event – and a real family day,” she said.
“It is lovely to run past the city attractions and to see so many people out in support of the runners.”
The York run, which raises money for The Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Martin House Hospice and Macmillan Cancer, along with new partner charities, St Leonard’s Hospice and Bone Cancer Research Trust, has raised £500,000 to date.
A new element for this year’s Run For All York event will be the Run For Gold, which aims to encourage people to set personal targets, whether 10 kilometres, a marathon or endurance event, in return for a “gold” medal.
