WITH one stroke of his biro, city strategist Dave Merrett and his “traffic experts” have created another Water End fiasco at the junction of Blossom Street and Holgate Road.
In his letter of June 13, AP Cox describes accurately the shortcomings. Like him, I too use this junction daily as a pedestrian, cyclist, and motorist.
This Labour administration’s obsession to promote Cycle City – to the detriment of the motorist – gives the cyclist, who pays no road fund tax, priority over all other road users.
At the second lights, these experts have designed a mythical “cycle well”, which is to gather in the bikers before giving them green. In reality, many have already jumped the red and have long gone.
Meanwhile, 50 yards back at the first lights, poor driving aggravates the situation still further – huge distances between stationary vehicles, slow uptake, no anticipation – in fact, some drivers seem surprised when the lights turn green.
At peak periods, the tailback reaches the Holgate Bridge, passing York Labour Party’s offices, whose occupants tend to keep their heads down as such times. No wonder they have to replace their front window occasionally.
Simple remedy – decommission the first lights. Try it, Mr Merrett, or stick to establishing new bike sheds, as before!
