The ten winners of the York Design Awards 2012 were announced at a ceremony at the Yorkshire Museum, with the projects including a restored well, a swimming pool and an historic ceiling.

Four judges, headed by leading architect Robert Adam, viewed 26 entries, with the Lord Mayor’s Award going to B3 Architects for the St Peter’s School swimming pool, described as a “bold and striking building”.

CL Parker & Sons and Ferrey & Mennim won awards for extensions at West View, Upper Poppleton, and Clifton’s White House respectively, with Nieman Architects being praised for The Quadra scheme at Garrow Hill and City of York Council claiming awards for schemes at Applefields School and Library Square in the city centre.

Other awards went to BDP for the University of York’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television, Holland Brown for Heslington Hall’s ceiling, Richard Parkin and Roger Wools for a Bootham property and Wiles & Maguire for the Pikeing Well in New Walk.

The awards were sponsored by S Harrison Developments Ltd, York Civic Trust, York Archaeological Trust, York Guild of Building, the Dean Court Hotel and the council.

The judging panel included historic buildings advisor Peter de Figueiredo, senior Newcastle University architecture lecturer Dr Hendrik Louw, and project architect Stefanie Stead, who also chairs the Construction Industry Council Yorkshire and Humber.

Guest speaker Alan Baxter, a senior design consultancy partner and fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, told the ceremony York was “a prime example of how good design uplifts our lives.”
