I WOULD like to clarify some points in Coun Ann Reid’s letter of June 14 regarding the York800 celebrations.

The Winter Wonderland was not a council event but was run by a private company on land hired from the council. It did not come under Coun Crisp’s area of responsibility. The council is vigorously pursuing the outstanding rent.

The Jubilee Beacon was originally intended to be in St Helen’s Square but officers were required to relocate it on safety grounds. We are pleased that a good event took place at Bachelor Hill. The national website failed to update their publicity despite our instruction to them to do so. We are sorry if anyone missed out as a result of this.

It is great news that the 2012 events are proving so popular with crowds bigger than originally expected. We are learning the lessons from the experience of the authorities ahead of us on the route, and by issuing free tickets (other councils have charged) the council is ensuring that everyone will be able to enjoy the events safely.
