Poppleton top two divisions of the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League after respective wins at York.

In the top-flight, Poppleton 1 had two pairs unbeaten at York 1, with John Moore and Paul Cook scoring the maximum three points and a crucial 10-2 final rubber to clinch the team bonus by a slender 56-52 games margin.

Alongside them, in the top-two division six clash at Clifton Park, Stephen Fenton and Brian Graystone led the line, with a 28-game three-point maximum, as Poppleton 3 romped to a 72-36 ten-point win over York 4.

Invincibles David Lloyd had only lost one rubber from 27 this year.

But that changed with the visit of Fulford, as Sean Evans and Richard Parker ripped it up for a maximum three points, including a vital 10-2 rubber to win and oust their hosts from top spot.

Ed Barker-Wyatt and Tom Walker helped Pocklington bag the bonus with a final 10-2 success at former leaders, Rowntree Park.

In division two, Castlegarth closed the gap on runaway leaders Wigginton, with an 8-4 win at Bubwith, thanks to three points and 27 games from Roger Fawcuss and David Woon. Knaresborough King James’ debutants Andy Taylor and Andy Lightbody each scored three points, partnering Andy Cousins and Alex Wilkin respectively, in an impressive 9½-2½ win for the visitors at Stamford Bridge.

A haul of 32 games from Phil Bremner and Jonathan Sharpe helped Sherburn to a 12-pointer at home to strugglers Rufforth to head division three.

But in close pursuit, John Neary and Kevin Davison with 3 for 26 helped Rowntree Park 2 to ten points at Wilberfoss. Chris Burnham and Matt Waudby narrowly edged Mike Taylor and Kevin Todd 7-5, as Wigginton 2 restricted Dunnington 2 to just two points at the head of division four.

Damion Galloway and Rob Noonan managed two points and 21 games for Strensall at home to a rampant Bishopthorpe.

Riccall had the edge to win five rubbers and draw two in a tight match at home to runaway division five leaders, David Lloyd 2.

Twins Andy and Patrick Woodward starred with 3-24 as Riccall won a stunning nine points from just 60 games. An unlucky break handed Sutton-on-Derwent 2 their first win of the year 57-51 at home to York 3.

York’s Malcolm Pringle managed a ½ point, despite suffering a stress fracture of his ankle in the first rubber. He soldiered on, only to retire midway through the second. But his team-mates still managed to bag 5½ points from the match keeping York three above Sutton.

Bishopthorpe’s 12-pointer at home to Wilberfoss 2 nudged them to second in division six after captain Kelvin Riches shot 3-30 with partner Chris Sharples.

An astounding 35 points from three matches propelled Wigginton 3 25 points clear of their division seven rivals. Top guns were their first pair of Andy Galloway and Scott Farquhar with three points and 34 games at bottom team Dunnington 3. Stamford Bridge’s rotation meant hosts Knaresborough King James’ 2 faced some formidable players as Bridge 3 romped to an 11-1 (78-30) win to go second in division eight.
