POCKLINGTON is to remember the life of the man who bequeathed Burnby Hall Gardens in trust for the benefit of townspeople.
The Gardens are commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of Major Percy Marlborough Stewart next Tuesday.
The event will include talks by Jim Ainscough, co-author of Major Stewart and the People of Pocklington, at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 3.30pm, and tours of the garden by the estate manager at 11am and 1pm. Spaces are limited so it is advisable to pre-book.
There will be talks in The Stewart Museum throughout the day about the collection of artefacts Major Stewart brought back from his world tours and the trust’s chairman, Richard Haynes, will also be at the gardens throughout the day to talk about the role of the trust and answer questions.
There will also be a Cabinet of Curiosity in the bandstand where visitors young and old can get hands on with some of the major’s artefacts.
Normal admission charges apply but there are no additional fees.
Events manager Sara Waddington said: “Pocklington is so lucky to have a place like Burnby Hall Gardens right on its doorstep and I think it’s important to remember the man who created it.”
