FURTHER to your article on June 9 about the memorial to Bombadier Wilkinson VC, several years ago a member of the York branch of the Royal Naval Association, Brian Fowler, discovered the grave and details of Bombadier Wilkinson VC and brought them to the attention of York Branch of the Royal Marine Association.
York Cemetery was requested to tidy up the grave so a memorial ceremony could be held there. This was done and a memorial service has been held there in June every year until this year and a wreath has been laid on the grave from the Royal Marine Association. The service has not been held this year as it was decided, due to ill health of members, to make it bi-annual.
The service has been attended by the York Royal Naval Association, whose padre has led the service and recently by the Scarborough Branch of the Royal Marine Association.
We also placed a seat near the grave dedicated to Bombadier Wilkinson’s memory. The original seat was damaged and a replacement was put there last year and is being made ready for the plaque to be replaced. The replacement seat was purchased by funds raised by York Royal Marine Association.
Marie Taylor, York Branch Royal Marine Association, St Wulstan Close, York.
