PUPILS at a York primary have been rewarded for their creative efforts after they came up with names for parts of one of the city’s largest ever housing schemes.

Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) ran a competition with Osbaldwick Primary School to encourage youngsters to name the energy centre, pond and children’s play area at the 540-home Derwenthorpe housing development which has just welcomed its first residents.

Year 6 pupil Bronwen Mollan thought up the new name of the energy facility, which will be known as the Super Sustainable Centre and will be a community hub as well as providing heating and hot water for homes. The play area will be known as Derwenthorpe Kids’ Zone, as suggested by Year 5 pupil Kieran Bulmer.

Derwenthorpe’s pond will be named Jubilee Pond, thanks to Year 4 pupil Olivia Lamb, while seven other children were named joint winners for the best posters designed to outline the environmentally friendly ethos behind the development.

JRHT trustee Graham Millar said: “We are delighted with the imagination and creativity shown by the pupils and their enthusiasm for Derwenthorpe - it’s great they are able to leave a lasting mark on their local community.”

The first houses, built by David Wilson Homes, are now complete, and the new home owners have moved in. To mark the occasion, JRHT held a tour yesterday to showcase the new show home, lakeside park and play areas and energy centre.
