A FAMOUS York saint could soon have her name permanently written on the city’s street map.
Calls for a street to be named after Margaret Clitherow have come from the Knights of St Columba, a Roman Catholic lay order, which has presented a petition signed by 426 people from churches across the city to the Lord Mayor, Coun Keith Hyman.
It calls for a street to be named after St Margaret, who was martyred on Ouse Bridge in Tudor times. After talking to the Lord Mayor, the petitioners were hopeful that the steps from Ouse Bridge down to Kings Staith could carry her name.
John Rayne-Davis, Grand Knight Council 95 Knights of St Columba, said: “The Lord Mayor is sympathetic. The steps would be ideal as it is near where she was martyred.”
Naming the steps was the suggestion of Canon Michael Ryan, who is in charge of the shrine of St Margaret in Shambles. Mr Rayne-Davis was joined at the presentation at the Mansion House by Provincial Grand Knight of the Knights of St Columba John Smith and other knights.
