COUN McIlveen has the cheek to claim that other parties “say one thing and do another” (Letters, June 14).

Labour has made U-turns an art form. In March, they said all salt bins would be funded by the council; last month they asked parish councils to fund them. In their manifesto they promised to use new powers to demand better bus services; last month bus services were cut in my ward.

Their manifesto promised to “empower people and make residents the driver for change”; this year they have cut the ward committee budgets by 66 per cent.

Their 2011 manifesto promised more money for road repairs; their budget cut the road maintenance budget by £895,000. Their manifesto promised to increase the amount we recycle and listen to residents; in April they ignored 3,000 local residents and closed one of York’s key recycling and waste centres, Beckfield Lane.

Their manifesto promised to protect vulnerable people; last month they proposed cutting social care provision.

They have also U-turned on a promise to support local schools by deciding to close Burnholme School and on their promise to keep council tax down.

This is a shameful record of saying one thing and doing another.

Coun Nigel Ayre (Lib Dem), Galtres Road, Heworth, York.
