UPDATE: 4.45pm - Firefighters in North Yorkshire said they responded to more than 25 flooding calls as a wave of heavy rain moved across the county.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said crews were sent to 14 locations, many involving flooded properties, although the incidents are thought to have been isolated.

He said areas affected were around Harrogate, Knaresborough and Boroughbridge in the west of the county and Bedale and Leeming Bar in the north.

UPDATE: 11.55am - A lightning strike left two residents of a house near Selby shaken last night, as part of their roof was destroyed.

The incident occurred at a property in Back Lane, off Sand Lane, Osgodby, at about 6.30pm yesterday.

The lightning struck the roof of the property and blasted two holes in it, before travelling along the inside the roof, which featured metal brackets attaching wood to brick, then burst through two bricks at the end of the building.

The electrical surge caused by the lightning strike caused most electrical appliances in the house to fault, and the homeowner said it was too early to know how much the repairs would cost.

Local residents said the house had "a blue aura around it" after the strike.

North Yorkshire Fire Service attended the scene to check for fire and remove loose debris, before patching up the roof with tarpaulin.
