Angling: Bleak is a bonus for ace Sturdy

The river Ouse at Acaster Malbis was swollen with extra water and the weather did not help with very strong winds and heavy rain throughout the match.

But of the 11 anglers who competed, John Sturdy led the way.

Drawn on peg one, his winning weight of three lbs comprised a haul of bleak, supplemented by a couple of small roach.

Second place went to Alan Moult on peg eight with two skimmer bream for a weight of 2lb 15oz.

Third place went to Peter Webster 2-12 ahead of Matthew Crowl (1-8), Kevin Clarke and Peter Mills (both on 0-12) and Ben Wilde (7-4).

Meanwhile, York District Angling association’s first river match attracted 50 rod wilders.

Honours went to P Hyde of Leeds Angling Centre, whose 6-13 comprised a 6lb barbel, plus three roach on Lobworm fished on the ledger.

He also won the match last year.

Second were T Hewitt (Tackle2u), and I Bates (Leeds Angling Club) both with catches totalling 5-14.

Hewitt had seven hybrids on lobworm fished at the rod end, while Bates’ bag included a 3lb barbel and three hybrids on lobworm fished in the middle with a 2oz Bomb.

Insects warning

ANGLERS using Claxton Pond have been warned about insect bites.

A rodman, who visited Claxton Pond on Monday, suffered several nasty bites from insects.

The pond is well known for mosquitos and other flying bugs, so it is extremely advisable for members to take, and use, a good insect repellent.
