IT’S been 20 years since the sometime Eagle brought out a solo album. At 64, he still has this or that to say, even if the title track is basically a grumpy-old-man outing, although cheerily done and with some good and nasty guitar playing.
Funk 50 offers further proof that Walsh hasn’t lost the use of his fingers. The latent mood is one of reflective happiness, as summed up by the country-esque Lucky That Way, which reverses that old Van Morrison trick of moaning about his famous lot by singing that everything is swell and thanks for asking.
The song Family sums up what is now important to Walsh, while One Day At A Time is an affecting account of not drinking. Some of the old edge and spirit is gone, but there are still undemanding pleasures to be found here.
