A NEW restaurant is set to be opened next to York’s Bar Walls.

City of York Council has approved plans by SA Properties for the former catering support centre in St Maurice’s Road to be turned into the business after proposals for a hotel on the site were dropped.

The company’s original application for a 26-bedroom hotel was withdrawn following criticism from groups including York Civic Trust, and a subsequent scheme for a 12-bedroom hotel was turned down by the council earlier this year.

Agents acting for the applicants have said the restaurant development would involve “limited alterations” to the existing building and ensure views from the nearby historic walls were not affected. The site has been regularly targeted by vandals since the catering centre closed.
