POLICE have said it is proving difficult to remove squatters from a York garage that has become vandalised, but have vowed to try to tackle related problems.

Local people and businesses have complained about the damage to the former Citroen garage and Bubbles car wash site in Lawrence Street which has fallen into disrepair and been occupied by squatters in recent months, but police said attempts to remove the occupants have proved complicated.

Windows have been smashed and in March, Stephen Eastwood, 45, was left in a coma with serious head injuries, after an attack outside the premises.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The situation is complicated by the fact the owner of the derelict property is based overseas, meaning it has been difficult for the necessary civil legal measures to be put in place to order the removal of the individuals who are currently occupying the building.”

He said local officers were working with the city council and other organisations and were aware of complaints. He said police would visit complainants to reassure them that matter was being dealt with.

He said: “The area is also being patrolled to ensure a visible police presence while efforts are ongoing to resolve the problem.”

One local resident, who asked not to be named, told The Press: “All the windows have been smashed and covered with boards and shouting and screaming can be heard coming from the building by people in the neighbouring residential buildings.”

He said he was worried that if the building was set on fire, it could spread to The Tannery flats next door, and the almshouses on the other side.

City of York Council declined to comment. The police spokesman said anyone witnessing trouble at the property should phone 101.
