THOUSANDS of women will be lining up to take part in York’s Race For Life tomorrow to boost funds for research into cancer.

About 2,600 women have signed up to take part in the annual event at Knavesmire which is this year hoped to raise £240,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Jenny Key, Race for Life event manager for York, said: “Looking at all the ‘back signs’ that women wear at the event, declaring why they are taking part in Race for Life, is a very emotional experience. Many signs have been beautifully decorated with photographs in tribute to loved ones whose lives have been touched by the disease. I feel so proud and grateful to everyone who is taking part in Race for Life in York and to all the family, friends and colleagues who are supporting them.”

Among those taking part will be Natalie Johnson, 37, from Haxby, who lost her grandfather to cancer in 2002 and has taken part in the Race for Life since then.

Race for Life women-only series of events which raises millions of pounds every year for research into 200 types of cancer – helping men, women and children across survive.

Cancer Research UK spent nearly £9 million in Yorkshire last year on a wide range of research into many types of cancer, supporting the work of doctors, nurses and scientists at hospitals and major universities in the region.

The Race for Life will start at the racecourse at 7.30pm tomorrow.
