PROMOTION is the goal for New Earswick after a 66-42 victory at Wigginton in division six of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League.
The village club lead the table at the half way stage thanks to a superb display against Wigginton.
Yvonne Petriso and Nicky Georgion opened up with a 10-2 win, before Lisa Debenham and Theresa Roberts Hardy registered an 8-4 success. Maggie Crawford and Jean McDonald pulled in two 6-6 draws to help the team take the points. There was an almighty tussle between second-placed Bishopthorpe and third-placed Copmanthorpe, with Bish eventually winning 55-53.
Copmanthorpe led 41-31 going into the final round, but then injury struck and they were forced to concede 12 games. Joint division one leaders Dunnington beat Pocklington 65-43. Dunnington share the lead with York, but they have played an extra match. Poppleton were the highest scorers as they thrashed Fulford 2 82-26. Wendy Cook and Lisa Garland held on to two of Poppleton’s stars in back-to-back 6-6 draws, but the highest hitting players were Pop’s Fiona Geldart and Catherine Baker with a 12-0 11-1 11-1 return.
Rufforth opened up a four-point lead at the top of division five as Liz Powell and Clare Hildreth top-scored with 26 games in a 67-41 win over Bishopthorpe.
Cliffe beat Sutton-on-Derwent 65-43 to go second in division four.
