AMATEUR golfers get their chance to shine in front of the TV cameras at Pocklington’s KP Club on Thursday.

The William Hunt Trilby Tour returns to the course with a host of ambitious competitors lined up to experience what the professionals feel – playing in a televised event in front of a big crowd.

The competition is watched by more than two million people on Sky Sports and the KP has hosted the Trilby Tour Yorkshire final since 2010 and is delighted to have been chosen again to form part of the nationwide tour for this prestigious competition.

Created by Savile Row tailor William Hunt in 2007, the Trilby Tour is a fiercely competitive event concluding with a four-man, three-hole shoot-out to decide the winner.

This year’s final is at Stoke Park on August 16.

All players are kitted out with a William Hunt outfit, trilby hat, limited edition Callaway golf bag and caddy outfit.

Among the York players hoping to book a final berth is Dave Carrington, captain of Sandburn Hall GC in Flaxton and a nine-handicap golfer. He said: “I watched it last year and my wife said to me ‘can you do better?’ I said ‘I hoped so’ and she said I should play.

“I have had a practise round and that went really well so I am hoping to recreate that.

“I am quite excited about it and looking forward to it. I’m not particularly nervous and it would be great to get on the TV hitting a good shot.”

Aaron Pheasant, KP director of golf, added: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the Trilby Tour back to the KP.

“There’s always a terrific atmosphere and the crowd really get behind the players. It’s a great opportunity to showcase our championship course, looked after by our ex-Gleneagles head greenkeeper.

“This competition fits perfectly with our approach to golf – respect for the traditions of the game combined with a fresh laid-back attitude and bold passion.”

Hunt added: “The reason we keep on coming back to the KP is quite simple – the people. When I first came to the KP it was under ten feet of snow.

“The warm welcome I received made me think the snow would melt there and then, and if the course was half as good as the fantastic hospitality, then we’re on.

“It was, and here we are still. I cannot tell you how brilliantly the KP do things. They make everyone feel special. The KP is a benchmark for modern golf – sport, fun, style and all with a smile.”

During the day there’s plenty going on off-course too at the KP with the Rekordelig cider trailer, a mobile bar from Glasgow brewery West and the Veuve Clicquot pop-up champagne bar on the Glass House balcony.

The KP team will be serving up cocktails and craft beers alongside the barbecue, and when the competition is over the coals will be fired up for a hearty hog roast in the evening with live music and DJ and a late bar.
