A PUB could face new strict opening conditions or even closure after police called for a review of its licence.

The New Inn, in Gowthorpe, Selby, will be the first pub to be subjected to a licensing review by Selby District Council, following orders from North Yorkshire Police after more than 30 call-outs to the premises in recent months.

Most recently, police were called to the Main Street club, part of the New Inn, after a large disturbance involving about ten people on May 25, where a 33-year-old man suffered a large cut to his face which required 15 stitches.

Tim Grogan, licensing officer for the council, said the review had been requested by police following the incident.

He said: “We have never, ever had a review of a licensed premises in Selby. This is the very first one.

“This is an opportunity for members of the public who have issues with the pub or noise to make representations. There are a number of people living in the area who have intimated they will make objections.”

A police spokesman said the most recent incident was still under investigation, but could confirm: “North Yorkshire Police have asked for a review of the licence following more than 30 incidents reported in recent months.”

New licensing rules came into force in November 2005, and mean an official review can be undertaken by any responsible authority, including the police, fire service, or people living in the vicinity of a licensed premises.

Under the new rules, Mr Grogan said licensing authorities could impose warnings or conditions on licensed properties, including limited opening hours, ordering CCTV to be installed, hiring doormen, and could even revoke a property’s licence altogether.

No one from the New Inn was available to comment, but a spokeswoman for Punch Taverns, which owns the pub, said: “We are co-operating fully as part of the review process and continue to work very closely with the local authorities.”

Anyone who wishes to make a representation to the licensing officer should send it in writing to Selby District Council, Civic Centre, Doncaster Road, Selby, YO8 9FT, before Tuesday, July 17.
