DURING May, Court (Branch) White Rose No 447, Ancient Order of Foresters Friendly Society, celebrated the 175th anniversary of its founding at the Cross Keys Inn, Goodramgate, York in 1837.

Guests travelled from various parts of the country, some choosing to spend the weekend in York and most were delighted with their stay.

However, two guests had a most unhappy experience with their hotel (not the Cross Keys Inn). The accommodation was booked in February for Saturday, May 26; two weeks before that date they were informed the booking was being cancelled.

When this was queried by the visitors they were informed the hotel did not operate a “single night service”.

The hotel agreed this had not been raised at the time of the reservation. With some reluctance it was agreed to reinstate the booking but only on condition of extra payment.

On arrival, the visitors received a surly welcome, were requested to pay prior to viewing their room by cash or credit cards as cheques were not accepted. An extra charge for payment by card was required.

The final indignity was being requested to pay £5 for use of hair dryer, £1 per towel used and £10 for breakfast. Needless to say the ladies chose to eat elsewhere.

We are appalled at this treatment of visitors. Thankfully, the guests viewed this disgraceful episode with humour and joked that it would make a good story for the future.
