I WAS surprised to read that the Labour Cabinet through its involvement in Reinvigorate York was trying to take credit for the award-winning changes in Library Square (The Press, June 21).
The scheme was a Liberal Democrat project that was opposed by the then Labour opposition.
Coun Sonja Crisp, Labour’s social inclusion spokeswoman at the time, called the scheme a “nightmare”, said it could not be afforded, and said Labour’s alternative council budget would call for the plan to be scrapped (The Press, February 16, 2011).
Fast forward to last week and Labour cabinet member Dave Merrett praised the scheme for the installation of new paving, benches and lighting, saying it had created a more pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.
Perhaps it is not surprisingly that at a time when Labour is being criticised for closing a local school and hiring a temporary member of staff on £3,000 a week, they are desperate to jump on any passing good news story.
Before long this cabinet will be claiming credit for the new pool at the university which they opposed, for the Mystery Plays and Olympic Torch agreed by the Liberal Democrats, and for the Lib-Dem manifesto pledge to deliver a community stadium.
Coun Ann Reid (Lib Dem), Grassholme, Woodthorpe, York.
