A PETITION has been launched to oppose the axing of litter bins in a York community.

Figures seen by The Press revealed this week that 344 bins, as well as five dog-waste bins, are being removed by City of York Council, 36 per cent of the total.

The Labour-run authority says the cuts are needed to help balance its budget by saving £40,000 on collection rounds.

Fulford councillor Keith Aspden said his ward would lose 12 of its 27 bins, making it “one of the worst-hit areas” and has now set up a petition.
