YORK’S most successful modern-day bowls player Zoe Eagles has achieved a long-held dream.
Three years ago in a Big Interview with The Press, the then 18-year-old said she would love to represent England at full international level.
That aspiration was realised when she came through national trials held at Warwick for both the outdoors Under-25 team, whom she has represented for the last three years, and the seniors.
Eagles bagged places in both squads and, in Bangor in Northern Ireland, she made her full England debut.
While the 21-year-old did not feature in the opening match of the Home International tournament, she played in the next three and starred in all three winning rinks.
However, England managed only third place overall as Scotland retained their crown.
Eagles will also win her sixth England U25s cap when she plays in their Home Nations event at Llanelli in Wales later next month.
Meanwhile, Huntington, who languish at the bottom of the York Club & Institute Union Bowls League with only one win this season, are through to the final of the Evening League Knockout Cup.
Huntington, who beat Burton Lane to lift the trophy in 2010, meet last year’s beaten finalists, Clarence, who had a convincing win over Holgate by 73 shots to 29.
The final will be played at the Railway Institute green in Ashton Lane, York, on Tuesday, July 10.
Two 8-0 victories – over Holgate and Poppleton Road – have seen Railway Institute open up a ten-point gap at the top of the Evening League. Second-placed Clarence have a game in hand.
In the Afternoon League, unbeaten Holgate lead the way by three shots.
In York Amateur Bowls Association League division one, Selby still lead the way by 1½ points, despite losing the top-of-the-table clash with RI Amateurs 6½-1½ and crashing 6-2 to relegation battlers Dunnington.
The Amateurs can take top place if they take full advantage of their game in hand.
Four consecutive defeats for Shipton and only one win in their last seven for Stewart leave both clubs with serious relegation problems.
Hull Road Park still head division two by seven points despite losing their first game of the season at Poppleton by 6-2.
Three consecutive victories for Nestlé Rowntree gives them a ten-point cushion in the other promotion place.
Harrogate took a major step towards exiting the relegation places with a 7-1 victory at Osbaldwick.
In division three, Clifton need to take advantage of their game in hand at Dunnington to regain top spot after Copmanthorpe took the lead with four consecutive wins.
