IN REPLY to Mark Gladwin (Letters, June 26), it is still peanuts to upgrade our Vanguard submarines with Trident warheads over the lifespan of the new generation of new nuclear subs.

These subs will last about 25 years; not bad for £76 billion.

We live in a nuclear age; more countries have nuclear weapons, therefore we need a deterrent that goes beneath the seas to defend ourselves.

These subs are much-needed in this day and age – even the Labour party agreed to upgrading our fleet of new nuclear subs. You will have to get used to this happening, Mr Gladwin.
