J NICOLSON (Letters, June 20) wants to keep the monarchy, but dislikes Charles, so advocates skipping a generation and going straight to William when the Queen dies. This is having it both ways.

The whole point of monarchy is that it’s a genetic lottery, so we will have to lump Charles unless we change the system.

If you want a say about the next head of state, let’s do the job properly and have an election. William could even be a candidate.
