THE people of York are being encouraged to commemorate the city’s proud military history on Armed Forces Day tomorrow.
The event will be marked in a number of ways, including the sounding of York Minster’s Carillon of Bells and the Armed Forces Standard being flown on the Mansion House.
Coun Sonja Crisp, City of York Council’s lead member for culture, recently joined forces with Brigadier Greville Bibby, Commander of 15 (North East) Brigade, to encourage people to back the day.
She said: “York has been home to the Army since AD71, when the first Garrison was established in the city, so the city has always held a strong bond with the Army.
“Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to support and strengthen this strong relationship that already exists between civilian and military communities in York.”
The council is offering all Armed Forces personal and their families discounted membership at all council run leisure facilities including Yearsley Pool and Energise.
