VISITORS to Hungate can take a stroll with the Queen thanks to a display of huge vintage and modern photographs from the archives of The Press, showing 60 years of royal visits to the city.
The images date back to 1949 when the then Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip paid a visit to the city.
The most recent pictures were taken by Press photographer Frank Dwyer and show the Queen’s most recent visit to York in April, for the maundy service at The Minster.
Niki Turner, sales and marketing director for Hungate Regeneration Ltd, said: “When we were thinking of how to mark the Queen’s Jubilee, we thought it would be fantastic if the newspaper were kind enough to let us display some of their photographs of previous Royal visits to the city on our prominent site.
“There are so many wonderful pictures which have been taken by Press photographers over the years, and the photographs we have on display, are representative of the Queen’s visits to York, including pictures of her last visit to distribute Maundy money in 1972.
“The photographs are already proving to be really popular with residents and visitors alike and I would like to say a big thank you to The Press for making it possible for us to put on this display.”
The images are decorating hoardings opposite the Marketing Suite in a Diamond Jubilee tribute, which will remain in place until the end of the year.
